Background

Carey Gire: Tutor

I am a long-time resident of Maryland now residing in Ashton. I have worked as a computer engineer and project manager for more than 25 years both with NASA and in the biotechnology industry. After early retirement in 2006 I continued my life-long passion for teaching by forming a private tutoring service.

I received my B.S. in mathematics from Michigan State University, where I studied as a National Merit Scholar. I received my M.S. in mathematics from Purdue University and an M.A.T. (secondary education) from Johns Hopkins University. I student taught at Wilde Lake Middle School in Howard County (6th grade) and at Glen Burnie High School in Anne Arundel County.

I was a teaching assistant in the remedial mathematics program at Michigan State for two years and at Purdue for an additional two years in the calculus program. My work at Purdue included two semesters as lecturer in multivariable calculus.

Over the subsequent 25 years I volunteered with a number of high school, Hispanic mentoring, and gifted child programs. During that period I helped establish a business-supported tutoring program with DuVal High School in Greenbelt, and I taught remedial mathematics to low-income residents of Montgomery County.

Effective immediately, I am no longer accepting new students. I am preparing to retire and plan to work with my current students only.

However, at a future date I intend to continue my tutoring work in the Ashton and Olney areas, but not as a paid tutor. More information will be forthcoming.

Also, please continue to view my separate informational website: The Educated Math Tutor. I plan to continue updating that site, focusing on the Puzzles and Competitions section.
